In this new series taking a deeper dive into getting to know the CEOs making up the Climate Leaders Coalition (CLC) and driving climate leadership from the top, we share some reflections from CLC Steering Group Member and KiwiRail CEO Peter Reidy.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for Aotearoa New Zealand businesses as the global economy transitions to low emissions?
The transition to a low emissions economy creates a significant opportunity for Aotearoa New Zealand to leverage our renewable energy advantage and build low carbon supply chains. New Zealand’s transport future relies on a connected multi-modal system where rail, road and coastal shipping work together to support economic growth, decarbonisation and a more resilient supply chain.
What is the most important role business leaders can play in accelerating climate action in Aotearoa New Zealand?
Business leaders must provide visible leadership by setting ambitious but achievable emissions reduction targets, and importantly backing them with action. Walking the talk builds confidence, brings others along, and shows that climate action and commercial success can go hand in hand.
What is one challenge businesses must work together to solve to reduce emissions more quickly?
A major challenge is aligning infrastructure investment and behaviours across sectors to decarbonise freight transport and logistics faster. No single organisation can do this alone; it requires coordinated action between businesses, government, and customers.
What advice would you offer to other CEOs navigating the transition to a low-emissions economy?
Start now, focus on what you can control, and don’t wait for perfect information. Embed emissions reduction into core business strategy rather than treating it as a standalone project, and work collaboratively across your value chain.
What gives you optimism about Aotearoa New Zealand’s ability to successfully transition to a low-emissions future?
I’m optimistic because Aotearoa New Zealand has a strong sense of collective responsibility, abundant renewable energy, and businesses that are increasingly willing to lead. When we combine innovation with collaboration, we’re well placed to succeed in a low‑emissions future.
