The Climate Leaders Coalition represents a powerful expression of collective will to transition New Zealand to a low emissions economy. As a company focused on enabling organisations to succeed sustainably, thinkstep's membership supports our vision for wider adoption of sustainability across New Zealand’s business sector.
We undertake Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies and Circular Economy projects, materiality assessments, strategies around SDGs, and support organisations to calculate and manage their carbon emissions. Our software solution SoFi provides powerful reporting on carbon and sustainability as well as relevant emission factors. Our GaBi software solution helps companies identify and reduce the life cycle emissions of their products and services.
thinkstep is a member of the Sustainable Business Council and a recently Certified B Corporation. We have also committed to setting our own science-based target for emissions.
Actions underway
At thinkstep we measure and monitor our GHG emissions using our own Carbon Management solution SoFi. To mark thinkstep Australasia’s move to local ownership in 2017, we published our first Sustainability Report (PDF) covering 2015-16 and publicly reported on our emissions for the first time. We plan to publish a second two-year report in 2019.
Due to the nature of our business, we have no Scope 1 emissions and low Scope 2 emissions, with our emissions profile dominated by Scope 3 (particularly business travel). We are committed to reducing our emissions and, being a signatory of the Science Based Targets initiative, are in the process of developing a target keeping within 2°. As part of this, we are carrying out a full review of our Scope 3 emissions.
thinkstep’s purpose is to enable other businesses to succeed sustainably. Our approach is to help our clients understand both their corporate impacts and the life-cycle impacts of their products and services, and to build strategies to reduce these. We work with organisations to develop initiatives to mitigate climate change while also improving other environmental, social and economic outcomes.
Our approach is not limited to supporting our clients. We are active members of the Sustainable Business Council, Sustainable Business Network, Green Building Council and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia, promoting their causes and working collaboratively to reach a wider audience. We initiated the Life Cycle Association of New Zealand (LCANZ) to promote the understanding and use of Life Cycle Assessment in New Zealand, and co-founded the Australasian EPD Programme (AEPDP) to enable Australasian companies to publish their EPDs in an internationally recognised framework.
We aim to improve understanding of sustainability issues, including climate change, through our communications, including webinars (examples Carbon Reporting, CDP, SBT; Scope 3; ISO 14067 ; Carbon Offsetting; EPDs; Product Portfolio & Supply Chain Assessment), conferences, social media (on Twitter and LinkedIn) and publications such as our recent built environment report.
While our focus is on enabling others, we don’t neglect our own business, as evidenced by our recent B Corp certification. Recognising that our largest emission source is business travel, we actively try to reduce it where possible. Our approach varies from utilising technologies such as teleconferencing and VOIP, to coordinating client visits to reduce flights, and using public transport where possible.
We minimise the impact of our purchased goods by buying reused and refurbished products where possible. Many of our laptops are refurbished and we extend the life expectancy of our existing stock with extra RAM and SD drives, while all our office desks are second hand. When sourcing new electronics we focus on energy efficiency, and our Formway LIFE office chairs were selected because they were designed using Life Cycle Assessment techniques to minimise their impacts.
We favour suppliers who are working to reduce their emissions with our support.

Most plastic is made from non-renewable petrochemicals. The extraction process and conversion into plastic releases carbon into the atmosphere, adding to climate change. So in 2014 we challenged ourselves to find a packaging alternative that goes beyond reducing emissions, and actually takes carbon out of the atmosphere. We found a packaging solution that can help to combat climate change. It’s plastic made from sugarcane.

Ecostore has announced that more than 80% of its packaging is made with renewable, sustainable sugar, and thanks to this significant investment, ecostore has helped save 4,485 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere since the company converted its packaging from petrochemical plastic to biobased ‘sugar’ plastic four years ago. The total savings achieved to date are equivalent to the amount of carbon emitted during 8,500 car journeys from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
