Panuku Development Auckland helps to rejuvenate parts of our city – from small projects that refresh a site or building, to major transformations of town centres or neighbourhoods.
We manage around $2 billion of land and buildings that Auckland Council owns, which we review continuously to find smart ways to generate income for the region, grow the portfolio or release land or properties that can be better used by others.
We identify development opportunities and prepare the ground to attract private investment and make it easier for others to take on the development of houses and commercial buildings. Together with our partners we unlock the full potential of this land to create spaces for Aucklanders to love.
Under our Corporate Responsibility framework Panuku is committed to integrate sustainability in development areas in response to the predicted impacts of climate change - improving environmental quality, and delivering infrastructure to support long-lasting behaviour change. Our work targets several areas:
Actions
In our re-development areas, specific carbon reduction activities that are underway include:

Panuku is a relatively new entity, having been established in 2015 from the merger of two organisations, Waterfront Auckland (development agency) and Auckland Council Property Ltd (portfolio management). We have started our emissions measurement and will report publicly in 2019.

Most plastic is made from non-renewable petrochemicals. The extraction process and conversion into plastic releases carbon into the atmosphere, adding to climate change. So in 2014 we challenged ourselves to find a packaging alternative that goes beyond reducing emissions, and actually takes carbon out of the atmosphere. We found a packaging solution that can help to combat climate change. It’s plastic made from sugarcane.

Ecostore has announced that more than 80% of its packaging is made with renewable, sustainable sugar, and thanks to this significant investment, ecostore has helped save 4,485 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere since the company converted its packaging from petrochemical plastic to biobased ‘sugar’ plastic four years ago. The total savings achieved to date are equivalent to the amount of carbon emitted during 8,500 car journeys from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
