Northland electric propulsion company Naut will be working with Shotover Jet owner Ngai Tahu Tourism on a feasibility study to build a new electric jet boat fleet.
Ngai Tahu Tourism has signed a contract with Naut for the work which initially will be for Shotover Jet’s fleet – although Ngai Tahu is looking to convert all its jet fleet to electric, including Hukafalls Jet and Dart River Adventures.
The signing is a step towards Shotover Jet’s goal of converting 50% of its boats to electric by 2030.
Ngai Tahu Tourism general manager Jolanda Cave says Naut’s passion and expertise made it a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Naut has engaged SSC Marine, Gurit, Parry Naval Architecture, McKay and WEBBCo to deliver customised electrically propelled marine vessels, having delivered the fully electric ferry Ika Rere in Wellington.
“Our team will be producing a feasibility study with the end goal of designing and building a new style of jet boat, that delivers all the thrills of the current jet boats, while helping Ngai Tahu Tourism meet their climate change goals,” says Naut chief executive Fiona Bycroft.
“We look forward to showcasing Naut’s advanced electric technology and working with some great NZ companies, all while make the solution beautiful and exciting in the process.”
Naut designs and manufactures electric propulsion systems for the marine industry, focusing on products for six to 12metre trailer or marina boats.
